Board Profiles

Raewyn LovettNetball New Zealand is governed by an eight-member board, currently chaired by Auckland lawyer Raewyn Lovett.

Raewyn Lovett is a lawyer specialising in commercial, corporate and employment law in Auckland. She is a partner and past Chair of national law firm Duncan Cotterill and is currently a member of the firm's Board. She has served as an independent director with several other organisations. She is the Chair of the Netball New Zealand Board, Chair of the High Performance Advisory Group and from 2009, also chairs the board of the Trans-Tasman Netball League (TTNL), which owns the ANZ Championsip.



SHIRLEY HOOPER/ Elected
Shirley Hooper runs her own marketing strategy company and netball has woven its way into her life in various guises during that time, she was once a New Zealand level umpire. Senior Marketing roles at a then major sponsor (Bendon) and broadcaster (TVNZ) continued her netball involvement at a different level as she helped build the sport's profile in the early days of commercialism.
In 2004, Shirley became involved at regional level, joining the board of Netball Auckland Waitakere and moving into the Chair's role the following year. Shirley's commercial experience as a Director of Bendon, and through work on a number of strategic projects for a diverse range of clients, including Whitcoulls, Oceania Group, Auckland Cricket and Pumpkin Patch stood her in good stead for the roles of Director and Chair of both the Diamonds and the LG Mystics franchises.

CAROLE MADDIX / Elected - Finance & Audit Committee and Maori and Pasifika Advisory Group Chair
Carole Maddix is a Director and Shareholder in several family businesses. She has been involved in Netball as a Player, Coach, Umpire and Administrator. Carole has served on the board of Netball North Harbour and Netball North. Carole is a member of the Finance and Audit Committee and Chair of the Maori and Pasifika Advisory Group.

KAREN BROWN / Elected
Karen Brown is employed by the Radio Network. She has been involved with Netball for over 20 years in a variety of roles from Player, Team Manager and Administrator at Club, Centre, Regional Entity and Franchise Board level. She was the first Chairperson of Netball Southland and has extensive event and venue management experience of provincial, national and international sporting, cultural and entertainment events.

LEE PIPER / Appointed
Lee Piper is the General Manager - Southern for the Radio Network and has woredd in the radio industry for 20 years. Lee has been involved in Netball for the past ten years, firstly as a member of Netball Southland Country and then as an inaugural member of Southern TeamCo. Lee is currently a Director of Rugby Southland.

SURI BARTLETT / Appointed - Finance & Audit Committee Chair
Suri Bartlett is a Director and Co-Owner of Tenzing Ltd, formerly KPMG Consulting, a Management and Technology Consulting firm. His firm offers a wide range of consulting services ranging from business strategy to systems implementations. Suri was a former partner of KPMG and has worked extensively in the UK, Switzerland and New Zealand. He is a Chartered Accountant and is the Chair of the Finance and Audit Committee.

JOHN BONGARD, ONZM / Appointed
John Bongard, appointed to the NNZ Board in October 2009, is the former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Fisher & Paykel. Bongard first joined Fisher & Paykel in 1973, became managing director of the company in 2001, and then was appointed Managing Director and Chief Executive from 2004-2009.

RAELENE CASTLE / NNZ Chief Executive, Board Member TTNL
Chief Executive Raelene Castle came to Netball New Zealand in June 2007 from Telecom, where she was Head of Business Marketing. Raelene has worked in the marketing, sales and communications areas for a number of leading New Zealand companies. She also has extensive Event Management and Sponsorship experience with involvement in the sponsorship of the Rugby World Cup 1995 and 1999, and the Olympics and NZOCGA 1992, 1996 and 2000. Raelene also managed the Fuji Xerox sponsorship of the America's Cup 2000 and was a member of the Marketing Committee for the America's Cup Event.

Dame Lois Muir, DNZM, OBE, Netball New Zealand President
Dame Lois has been involved with Netball as a player, coach and administrator at the highest level. She continues her involvement with Netball as Netball New Zealand President, promoting and supporting the game with the same passion and commitment she brought to her highly successful 108-test career as Silver Ferns coach. She has been a Netball New Zealand Life Member since 1989 and became President in February 2007. In that role, Dame Lois attends all Netball New Zealand Board meetings.
