The Steel has 4 new players in their 2011 ANZ Championship team: Natasha Chokljat, Sophia Fenwick, Paula Griffin and Te Paea Selby-Rickit. The Steel has 5 players in their 2011 team that were members of their inaugural (2008) team; Liana Barrett-Chase, Erika Burgess; Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit, Wendy Frew and Daneka Wipiiti. The Steel has four mothers in their ranks. Liana Barrett-Chase, Leana de Bruin, Sheryl Scanlan and Daneka Wipiiti. The Steel gave up their home court fortress status in 2010 when they lost their first match to an Australian team in the deep south. The Firebirds defeated the Steel 56-41 to become the only Australian Team to have beaten the Steel in either Invercargill or Dunedin in the three year history of the ANZ Championship. Paula Griffin joins her third ANZ Championship team in 2011. Griffin played for the Mystics in 2008 and the Pulse in 2009 & 2010. Natasha Chokljat joins the Steel in 2011 after three seasons with the Vixens. Chokljat is a 2009 Vixens ANZ Championship premiership player. Chokljat continues the Steel's love affair with former Aussie players after Megan Dehn was member of the Steel for the first three seasons. The Steel is one of just five teams (Thunderbirds, Swifts, Vixens, Magic & Steel) to have made the ANZ Championship semi finals. The Steel is one of three ANZ Championship teams with sisters on their roster. Te Huinga Reo and Te Paea Selby-Rickit, Grace and Rachel Rasmussen (Mystics) and Josie and Alicia Janz (Fever) are the other sets of sisters in the ANZ Championship.
