The first and third quarters of this match were very close, 11-10 to Waikato and 14-13 to Eastern, but Waikato's 19-goal second period proved decisive, and gave them a lead they didn't relinquish. Larrissa Harrison did most of Waikato's shooting, and was successful with almost three-quarters of her 56 attempts; while Malia Eyles made a valuable 16/17 contribution at goal shoot for Eastern, before switching to goal attack.

AUCKLAND WAITAKERE 44, drew with NORTH 44
A large, enthusiastic crowd at the Auckland Netball Centre enjoyed a thrilling encounter between great rivals North (4th in 2008) and Auckland Waitakere (2nd in 2008). Auckland Waitakere surprised spectators by leaving Anna Scarlett and Debbie White out of the starting line-up, and not calling on star shooter Cathrine Latu until the final quarter, but the team was very well served by young shooter Bailey Mes, who coped admirably with the spirited defensive work of former Silver Fern Vili Davu. North got a similarly fine performance from its U21 goal shoot Carli Botes, and Finau Pulu did excellent work on defence, picking up several valuable intercepts.

CANTERBURY 60, def WESTERN 58
A few critical errors by Western were all that separated these two teams in a high-scoring, entertaining match, with each side winning two quarters. Canterbury's young shooters, Ellen Halpenny and 16-year-old Sophia Fenwick proved their worth with steady and prolific shooting under pressure. Halpenny also coped well with a switch to goal attack in the second half, shooting 15 from 18 in that position. Canterbury captain Victoria Smith provided strong leadership on defence that flowed through the court and Hannah Poff was a steady influence at centre. Western made significant improvement on their 1st Round loss to Southland with Chantelle Ngaia posting perfect shooting statistics, and goal keeper Jodi Beaumont giving Halpenny a great contest. |

SOUTHLAND 53 def OTAGO 43
Otago, missing shooter Jodi Brown, out with a thigh injury, did well to be only a goal down at half-time, when Southland player-coach Natalie Avellino came on at goal shoot to steady her team and score seven from eight attempts at goal. It proved to be a decisive break, giving the reigning champions a nine-goal lead going into the final term. Southland's young shooters Ashleigh Smith and Julianna Naoupu both made better than 80% of their shots, while defenders Dana Bond, Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit and Erika Burgess proved too sharp for Otago's forward line, which struggled to feed the ball into their goal circle. Louise Thayer was equally impressive on defence for Otago, and was solidly supported by Emma Moynihan.
