England beat the Silver Ferns in a tight match.
After playing the last round of the first session, the Silver Ferns had to back up straight away in the next round and hit a fired up England team looking to impress their home crowd. Another slow start from Silver Ferns proved costly as the Silver Ferns again chased England throughout the match. A strong comeback in the 2nd quarter saw the team draw level before England used the power play to effect in the 3rd quarter to outscore NZ 10-3. The Silver Ferns saved their power play to the last quarter but were unable to secure enough possession to win. After half time the Silver Ferns switched Captain Casey Williams back to GK in a bid to contain England's player of the match, Jo Harten and despite full defensive pressure England stayed in control. Inspirational intercepts by Casey Williams and Laura Langman were not enough to close the gap and England now have 2 wins from 2 games and will face Jamaica tomorrow. Silver Ferns will have a short rest before playing Jamaica in the last game of the night.
A feature of the power play quarters has been the defensive strategies employed by the opposition with the key aim to maintain possession in a bid to slow down the scoring rate. |
