Round 3 Preview, 3-5 April

anzc-logo-2010-tbIt's Round 3 of the 2010 ANZ Championship and already pressure is starting to mount on the three winless teams: Queensland Firebirds, Adelaide Thunderbirds & Central Pulse. Add a match between the top two New Zealand teams, the interest of watching several players confront former team-mates and a trans-Tasman match in Christchurch, and we hope you've got a good supply of Easter eggs to get you through the holiday weekend!

All matches are broadcast live, unless indicated otherwise, on SKY Sport in New Zealand; please check the particular SS channel (1, 2 or 3).
All broadcast times are NZ time - please note that Daylight Saving ends on Sunday 4 April at 2.00 am.

Visit the official ANZ Championship website for live scoring, match reports & statistics.

SATURDAY 3 APRIL
NORTHERN MYSTICS v WAIKATO-BAY OF PLENTY MAGIC
The Trusts Stadium Arena, Auckland
2.00 pm, SKY Sport 1

The closest the Mystics have come to beating Magic in four games is their four-goal loss in Round 2, 2008. A win is a distinct possibility this year, given Mystics' sparkling form in the first two rounds, but Magic's class and ability to step on the gas when they need to have not deserted them.
These are currently the top two New Zealand sides on the ladder.

Players to Watch: The Mystics' new shooting combination of Cathrine Latu and Maria Tutaia meets Tutaia's former team-mates Casey Williams and Jodi Tod - get set for an absorbing battle of power & finesse up against serious grit & athleticism.

SUNDAY 4 APRIL
QUEENSLAND FIREBIRDS v ADELAIDE THUNDERBIRDS
Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Brisbane
4.30 pm, SKY Sport 1

Neither of these teams has posted a win yet, and they'll both be desperate to avoid going winless into Round 4. A home crowd may swing it Firebirds' way but history is against them: the Thunderbirds have won all four of their previous ANZ Championship encounters.

Player to Watch: The Thunderbirds appear to be struggling without their former goal attack Natalie Medhurst, who is settling in nicely alongside Romelda Aiken at the Firebirds and faces her former-team-mates for the first time.

CANTERBURY TACTIX v NSW SWIFTS
Westpac Arena, Christchurch
6.30 pm, SKY Sport 1

These two sides have met early in each of the two previous seasons and the score is one-all - remember Tactix' stunning six-goal Round 2 defeat of the eventual champions in 2008? After a miserable 2009 season, the Swifts are flying high again, with wins against the well-fancied Thunderbirds and Firebirds already on the board. However, this is their third consecutive away game and the Canterbury side is capable of upsetting them in the only trans-Tasman match of the round.

Players to Watch: Outstanding defender Sonia Mkoloma was a key member of Tactix in 2009 and this year she's proving equally valuable to the Swifts. Tactix shooters Ellen Halpenny and Anna Thompson have been working well together, but they won't get more than a smile from their former team-mate. At the other end, Tactix defender Charlotte Kight is showing the benefit of Mkoloma's tuition with seven intercepts in the first two matches this year.

MONDAY 5 APRIL
SOUTHERN STEEL v CENTRAL PULSE
Edgar Centre, Dunedin
7.00 pm, SKY Sport 1

Pulse have never beaten Steel and head south with the underdog tag for this match, but if they can extend their solid first half work across all four quarters, Steel fans may need to raise their voices.

Players to Watch: Pulse defender Katrina Grant faces her 2009 Steel team-mates, while Steel's new recruit Leana de Bruin is already close to her best form, only four months after giving birth to her first child.

WEST COAST FEVER v MELBOURNE VIXENS
Challenge Stadium, Perth

10.00 pm, SKY Sport 1

The Vixens make their first trip of the season as clear favourites, but the ebullient young challengers from the West give no sign of excessive respect for rank, record or reputation, and will be fired up for a top effort in front of their home crowd.

Players to Watch: Is the tenacity of Vixens wing defence Renae Hallinan a match for the pace of Fever wing attack Madison Browne? Watch this match and find out!
