The man calling the shots

It's not often that you hear a male voice hollering instructions from the sideline but that's the case for the Counties Manukau Under-21 side competing in the National Age Group Championships in Dunedin.

The side is coached by David Booth, the only male at the helm of a team at the Under-21 and Under-19 Championships.

Booth's involvement in the game spans 18 years. He started coaching after his league career at Mangere Hawkes ended.

"I went to my daughter's netball games and I thought her ability to pass and catch the ball was pretty atrocious so I thought if I am going to say something I should be prepared to do something about it so I did."

He started off coaching daughter Christy's junior teams, moved onto college and club teams' and then finally representative teams, completing a number of Netball New Zealand coaching courses along the way.

"Some of the players, when they met you for the first time, probably look at you and say what is a guy doing here in a female dominated sport? But I think with a lot more male umpires coming to the fore in the ANZ Championship and things like that, it's a lot more accepted and a lot easier than it was.

"At representative level it gets a bit harder as the players question where your experience comes from because most of the coaches that are involved at that high performance level have usually played the game to a high level themselves. You just have to earn their respect first I guess but I don't think it's really any different for female coaches either."

Booth believes more male coaches are starting to emerge.

"We are such a busy society these days I think all sporting organisations look for help from males and females. I only have one daughter and I was always going to follow her sporting life and I think that's the same for a lot of men and fathers out there, they want to be involved."

With his wife Karen as his manager David also coaches the Mellons Bay Premier side in the Counties Manukau regional league.

And he has higher aspirations

"I enjoy the challenge. I did one of Netball New Zealand's apprentice coaching courses, alongside (Mystics Assistant Coach) Debbie Fuller a few years back so I suppose that is where I would ultimately like to head as well, to one of the (ANZ Championship) franchises."

But for now his focus is on Counties Manukau.
