How to set goals in netball

  1. Ask yourself, what are your dreams and aspirations in Netball?
    a. Dream big. You have the talent.
“Champions are not extraordinary people; they are normal people who do extraordinary things”

Your weaknesses are your assets. Minimizing and eliminating your weak points will take your game to the next level.

  2. Talk to your coach
    a. Ask key questions
    i. Where am I now?
    ii. What are my strengths?
    iii. Where can I improve?
Take ownership for your improvement! Once you have your coach’s input, don’t rely on them to do the goal setting process for you.

  3. Prioritize your needs
    a. Don’t set too many goals at one time. Pick one or two long-term goals, and set up short-term goals that will make your journey more fun and attainable.

  4. Strategy – what actions will you take to achieve your goals?
    a. Outline a strategy. Be specific e.g Fitness Goal Strategy: I will do 30min’s extra sprint work on non-practice days (Mon/Wed). I will find a training partner to maintain my effort and motivation. Make it fun!

  5. Commit to your strategy.
    a. Ask yourself that you have the desire and motivation to pursue your goal achievement strategy.
    b. Be honest with yourself

Monitor your goal setting

  1. Write down your goals
  2. Remind yourself of your goals
    a. Have words or pictures posted in places where you can see them regularly.
    i. On the bathroom mirror you could post a picture of a player you aspire to be like.
ii. See yourself in that position, VISUALISE!
  3. Ask yourself?
    a. What did I do today to become a better player?

Tell yourself

“Every day in every way I am getting better and better”

Setting goals provides more than just results on the court. It creates an opportunity to see yourself improve, and when you achieve your goals the triumphant feeling will inspire you to dream bigger. There will be moments of self-doubt, when you feel that you are not on the right track. There will be days you will wake up for an early morning run and see the pouring rain outside. These are the days that are more rewarding than any other! Honour your schedule and stick with your plan, it will brew the inner toughness you need to compete at an elite level.
