On Sunday August 6th Rotorua Netball Centre hosted our University of Waikato NWBOP Open Grade & Year 10 Secondary School Tournament.

Now in its third year, the tournament helps teams to prepare for UNISS while playing new teams from around the Waikato Bay of Plenty (WBOP) Zone. The rain stayed away and although it was a bit chilly, all 55 teams that entered didn’t let the weather slow them down, soon warming up and taking the to court to show their skills.

In the Year 10 section Taupo Nui-a Tia College and Rotorua Girls High both went through to the semi finals unbeaten joined by Cambridge High School with four wins and a draw in the round robin. Tauranga Girls College and Matamata College tied in Year 10 section one with four wins and a draw each in pool play, with Tauranga Girls College claiming the last semi-finals spot on goal difference.

Rotorua Girls High and Cambridge High School both won their respective semis to meet in the final. The closely matched contest where both teams showcased their skill and talent on court ended with Cambridge ahead by one point at the final whistle to take the win 21 – 20.

In Open Grade section 2, Katikati College and Huntly College both proceeded to the final unbeaten in pool play. In a thrilling final, where both teams gave their all, extra time was needed after a draw at the fulltime whistle. Either team had to be ahead by two points to claim the win and Huntly College got the first break with an intercept finished by a long shot to secure their win over Katikati College 27 - 25.

In Open Grade section 1 Hamilton Girls High School, Waikato Diocesan and St Peter’s School were all unbeaten in pool play. Waikato Diocesan and St Peter’s played off in the semi-final while Hamilton Girls High School advanced straight to the final after a bye in the semi-finals. St Peter’s School eased past Waikato Diocesan 25 – 12 in the semis to claim their place in the final. With the long day and a few injuries hampering St Peter’s School’s valiant efforts Hamilton Girls High School were able to continue their fine form winning 22 -12.

Congratulations to all players and umpires identified as part of NWBOP Zone talent identification process and well done to all teams who competed.
