Thirty of the Zone’s top school players will attend an invitation-only Netball Central Advanced Secondary School camp at Te Wananga o Raukawa in Otaki this weekend (October 28-29).

Places in the camp were limited with the 30 successful candidates selected following a full weekend of identification across the Zone, the selection process led by Netball Central Zone (NCZ) head selector Aroha Marsh.

This is a significant achievement for the players and an integral part of the process of producing a winning home-grown Pulse team as well as ensuring that Netball Central remains to the forefront of national representation.

The New Zealand Secondary School team (NZSS) is a major drawcard for showcasing the Zone’s talent and where Netball Central has built a strong legacy. This year four from the Zone made the NZSS team, Ainsleyana Puleiata being named captain while also scooping the Secondary School Player of the Year award.

The upcoming Advanced camp is the second phase in a series of stepping stones for players from Centre through Zone with the goal of national representation.

``We have invited 30 players from across the Zone who we think have the potential to perhaps one day play for our Beko and/or Pulse teams in the long term and in the short term achieve a place at the Netball New Zealand (NNZ) National Development Camp,’’ Netball Central High Performance Director Waimarama Taumaunu said.

At this weekend’s camp, players will undergo fitness testing while also receiving fundamental attack and defence sessions as well as specialist individual skill sessions in shooting, midcourt and defence from Pulse coaches Yvette McCausland-Durie, Sandra Edge, Irene Van Dyk and Taumaunu.

There will also be education around nutrition and time management and some match play in front of one of Netball New Zealand’s Emerging Talent Selectors with the goal of enhancing chances for National Camp selection.

Selection for the National Development Camp will take place on November 6.

The coaching sessions will be open to observers.  Netball Central’s talented group of umpires will also be using the camp for their development.
